Japanese Footbridge by Fungleberry Japanese Footbridge by Fungleberry
Painted in Chicago, summer 2008. I found a place called the Osaka Garden along a major bike path that runs alongside Lake Michigan. The city of Chicago is built right at the waters edge. The path runs from one end of the city to the other. Having a bike is an absolute must.

Fun to paint!

This looks like it was very fun to paint. Nice, expressive line work going on. I can see your style allllll through it, even though it's been a while since ive seen a landscape from you. However, the painting seems a bit messy to me. Your style is working really well in some areas (the grass, the rocks, and the light blue in the water).

I just think I'd like to see greater contrast in the piece overall. Since pretty much the whole thing is treated the same way, it becomes a bit mushy. One idea would be to warm some of it up and let that contrast with the cool water, that could look nice. Finally, I'd love to see the bridge tightened up a bit more. For me, its the focal-point of the painting, but when my eyes go to it, they aren't captured. Instead the shape of it leads them right off the page. Do something to keep me focused on it and then lead me down into the water. Thats where I think a slight contrast in line treatment would help.
